Back in May, Jesse Eisenberg said he’ll probably be reprising his role of Lex Luthor for Zack Synder’s Justice League.
Now he has confirmed, through an interview with Shortlist, that he starts shooting for Justice League in August.
They are filming [Justice League] now, and I jump in from August, I loved the character and it was the most fun I’ve ever had at playing a role, and most challenging, in a great way, and most rewarding. I would love to play it for years. The character I play is so unusual and complicated. As an actor he’s everything you’d want to do. It’s very exciting for me to play that role. And, secondarily, it’s interesting to be in these massive, high-profile movies, because all the stuff around you as an actor is really good. All the artists are really great, so you walk on to a set and it’s the most-detailed, comprehensive set, and as an actor it really fills in your imagination in a special way. You’re also acting with incredible actors. In the last movie I had lots of scenes with Holly Hunter, who has been one of my favorite actors since I was young. This all exists because this movie is so massive that they attract so many talented people, even in smaller positions. It was really special to me. The most exciting part was to play such an interesting character and I certainly hope he stays alive throughout the next few films.
Unlike a lot of people, I love Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and can’t wait to see him back. He’s obviously very different than any other incarnation of Lex that we’ve gotten, which is great. The most important part though is the character, at its core, is still the overly confident and conniving Lex, with more power than he knows what to do with, that we’ve come to expect with each incarnation of the character. As far as how they wrote Lex in this movie, as a spoiled, young, and awkward billionaire, Eisenberg nails it. There were bad things about his Lex, but I blame them more on the writing than I do his performance.
That being said, given the blacklash his performance, i’m sure they’ll make him more like every incarnation of the character and give fans what they want. They seem to be doing that a lot for this movie, but most of it is for the better.
